But a public holiday means various archives and libraries are closed, so Eli and I were happy to spend an unexpected day with Jason.
Since it was a rainy, grey day, we decided to venture over the mall one block from our apartment in search of a new beach hat for Eli. However, since it's not actually summer here but almost winter, we only found fleece and woolen stocking hats. If you were wondering, the average winter temperatures during the months of June, July and August are 70-78F. We see people on a fairly regular basis wearing only bathing suits and flip flops. At any rate, we left the winter hats on the racks and instead enjoyed a Chinese/sushi buffet for lunch.
The checking of our mailbox (a favorite daily activity) garnered us a new piece of mail just for Eli, which he thoroughly enjoyed opening/reading.
We spent the rest of the day playing, going out for ice cream and doing a little grocery shopping. Our family days have been extra special for me recently. Jason's current archive is an hour-long bus ride one way, so we don't meet for lunch and depending on traffic, he may or may not be home in time for Eli's bedtime. Little sir and I spend our days taking walks, picnicking at the park, playing hours of catch with his soccer ball and learning to walk!--Eli has taken his first steps in the last few days, but we've yet to find many (read: any) mom/baby friends so the days can get a bit long when it's just the two of us.
