Even though it's pretty awesome to be living abroad and experiencing another culture & language, there are plenty of times we feel like fish out of water. So many things are different, foreign, strange even, and we stick out. Familiarity often equals comfort and it comes in all shapes and sizes. We have, on one more than one occasion, enjoyed the most delicious quarter pounders (quarterões) EVER at McDonald's. When we first arrived in Rio, I took Eli on an long-ish outing, riding the metro and then walking several blocks so we could partake in some Tutti Fruitti frozen yogurt. There's a mall here that has an Outback Steakhouse (honestly prohibitively expensive) but seeing the sign makes me smile a bit, because it's familiar.
This past weekend we needed a few household/grocery items. In the spirit of exploration and adventure, we decided to check out a new neighborhood/store and so rode the metro to our destination:
Yes. Brazil has Wal-marts. And yes, we went to one.
It's not a place we frequently visit back home. But, it was kind of great. Clean and bright with lots of friendly employees. Long escalators for Eli to ride. Comfy chairs to sit in. We found a new sippy cup for Eli, some knock-off brand Nutella and (drum roll please), boxed macaroni and cheese.
Which we ate for supper last night, complete with cut up hot dogs (Jason was pumped.) Don't worry, we ate it after Eli was already in bed and made sure he had a delicious and healthy supper of four cheese ravioli with onions and green peppers, yogurt, broccoli and watermelon.
The fake mac and cheese was comfortingly scrumptious. Jason and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
