We of course knew we wanted to visit the famous Christ statue at some point during our stay in Rio but lately have been enjoying our relaxing, unplanned weekends. Such a field trip with a toddler requires some planning (and a clear sunny day) but we realized last week that our time is running short, as we'll be moving to a new city in Brazil at the end of this month. We tried to go on Saturday afternoon, after Eli's nap, but arrived at the train station only to find out all the tram tickets were sold out for the day. Turns out the month of July is traditionally vacation time for Brazilians, as kids are on winter break from school, so the station was full and overflowing with people. You can't buy tickets in advance so we went again on Sunday morning. This time, we only had to wait an hour before taking the tram up the mountain.
.
The sights were breathtaking, the sky was incredibly blue and the Cristo Redentor was very majestic. One of the 7 wonders of the modern world and it really was amazing. But. The
scenic overlook was jam-packed with people. Eli did NOT want to be held
and rather wished to run around amidst all the stranger legs. And
yelled/cried (loudly) whenever we picked him up. So, we spent a lot of time doing this...
We did get a few of the expected shots amongst the crowd:
But as you can see, little man's patience ran thin quite quickly.
So we left sooner than originally planned, with the only crying kid in sight. Not the way I imagined the trip going in my head. But parenthood seems to be full of those types of experiences, both good and bad. Bottom line: it was definitely a trip worth making and we did enjoy the sights. And, 10 minutes, a dry diaper and some Cheerios later, we had a happier kid on our hands. Running around happily exploring is way more fun than taking pictures of some tall statue, right?
